Verinag

The spring traditionally counted as the source of the Jhelum.

At Verinag a deep blue spring wells up at the foot of a forested hill. Jahangir enclosed it in an octagonal stone tank surrounded by an arcade of arched niches, and Shah Jahan added the garden and water channel that lead away from it.

Facts

  • Jahangir loved the spot and is said to have wished to be buried here, though he was buried in Lahore.
  • Persian inscriptions on the site record the Mughal building work.
