Hari Parbat

The hill where Srinagar's faiths and empires meet.

Hari Parbat rises from the middle of Srinagar. Akbar ringed its base with a stone wall in the 1590s, and the Afghan governor Atta Muhammad Khan built the fort on its summit in 1808. Around its slopes stand the Sharika Devi shrine, the shrine of Makhdoom Sahib, the mosque of Akhun Mulla Shah and a Sikh gurdwara.

Facts

  • Hindu tradition tells that the hill grew from a pebble dropped by the goddess Sharika, in the form of a bird, to crush a demon.
  • Kathi Darwaza, one of the gates in Akbar's wall, still stands.
