Nund Rishi

Sheikh Nooruddin Noorani, known as Nund Rishi, taught a Sufi path rooted in Kashmir itself: simple food, respect for all living things and devotion over display. His verses in Kashmiri, called shruks, are loved across communities, and he is called Alamdar-e-Kashmir, the standard-bearer of Kashmir.

Facts

  • A line attributed to him, 'Ann poshi teli yeli wan poshi', food will last only as long as the forests last, is still quoted today.
  • Tradition links him closely with Lal Ded, the older mystic.
