The Hangul

Kashmir's own red deer, now endangered.

The hangul, or Kashmir stag, is a red deer found only in the forests of Kashmir. Hunting and loss of habitat reduced it to a few hundred animals, most of them in Dachigam National Park just outside Srinagar.

  • Dachigam was once a royal hunting reserve and is now a protected national park.
