Rinchan

The Ladakhi prince who became Kashmir's first Muslim ruler.

Rinchan, a Buddhist prince from Ladakh, came to Kashmir as a refugee and seized the throne after the raid of 1320. He is remembered as the first ruler of Kashmir to embrace Islam, taking the name Sadruddin.

Facts

  • Tradition says he was converted by the Sufi Bulbul Shah, for whom he built a hospice in Srinagar.
  • He married Kota Rani, who later ruled in her own right.
