Parihaspora

Lalitaditya's capital, now scattered ruins on a plateau.

Lalitaditya built Parihaspora as his new capital, filling it with a royal palace, Vishnu temples and Buddhist monuments including a large stupa and monastery. Its ruins, spread across a karewa plateau, show how Hindu and Buddhist buildings stood side by side.

Facts

  • The name means city of laughter or city of pleasure.
  • A later king moved the capital away, and stone from the site was reused elsewhere.
